What are the differences in the production process of using natural fibers and synthetic fibers to make Knitted Fabric?

The production of knitted fabric involves a careful selection of fibers, each with its unique characteristics and production processes. Natural fibers, sourced from plants and animals, and synthetic fibers, engineered from chemical compounds, undergo distinct manufacturing methods. Understanding the differences in the production processes sheds light on the diverse world of knitted textiles.
Natural Fiber Production:
Sourcing: Natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, and silk, are sourced directly from nature. Cotton is derived from the cotton plant's seed fibers, while wool comes from the fleece of sheep. Silk, on the other hand, is produced by silkworms.
Processing: Natural fibers undergo processing steps such as ginning (for cotton), shearing and cleaning (for wool), and sericulture (for silk). These fibers then go through spinning to create yarns suitable for knitting.
Knitting: In the knitting process, natural fiber yarns are threaded through needles and interlooped to form the fabric. The choice of knitting pattern, whether jersey, rib, or others, influences the fabric's texture and properties.
Synthetic Fiber Production:
Chemical Synthesis: Synthetic fibers, including polyester, nylon, and spandex, are created through chemical processes. For instance, polyester is produced by polymerizing petroleum-based chemicals into long chains.
Extrusion and Spinning: The resulting polymers are melted and extruded through spinnerets to form fibers. These fibers are then solidified and spun into yarns suitable for the knitting process.
Knitting: Similar to natural fibers, synthetic fiber yarns are used in the knitting process. However, the unique properties of synthetic fibers, such as their strength and elasticity, can influence the choice of knitting techniques.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Texture and Feel: Natural fibers often provide a soft and breathable texture. Cotton, for example, is known for its comfort and absorbency. In contrast, synthetic fibers can have a smoother, sometimes shinier, texture, and they may offer properties like moisture-wicking or quick-drying capabilities.

Environmental Impact: Natural fibers are generally biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact compared to some synthetic counterparts. However, advancements in sustainable practices aim to mitigate the environmental footprint of synthetic fiber production.
